Today´s Sermon May 26th 2013

Luke 22: 31- 38                                       2013.05.26
Victory in trials and tribulation part 2
Everything God does….. He does in victory over sin and trouble…... All of the purposes of God are fulfilled perfectly….. but always because God triumphs over trouble…….
This is a fallen world….. The Fall recorded in Genesis chapter 3 affected everything…… Sin has stained everything……
God always triumphs over evil….. He wins through trouble…..  and that night in the Upper Room there was trouble…… Trouble from Judas the traitor…… Trouble from the Apostles themselves who were arguing about which of them was to be the greatest…..  In our text this morning….. Trouble from Satan himself who came after Peter…. wanting to sift him like wheat to destroy his faith…… And who also came after the rest…. scattering them in fear when Jesus was arrested……
Do you remember that Jesus told us this…..
John 16:33b                    NLT        Neues Leben
33b I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.“
Why has God allowed evil?  In order that He might display His glory…..  By allowing evil, God has demonstrated His unfailing love…… the amazing love of God toward sinners who are evil and utterly unworthy…… People like me you…..  God loving His enemies….. this is the highest kind of love….. That´s what Jesus said in Luke 6:35…..  Jesus proved it when He lays down His life for His own……  We would never understand God’s righteousness unless there was sin in the world…….  We would never understand the wonderful miracle of His saving love without also knowing our own unworthiness…….
We would never know His mercy if there were not an opportunity to know forgiveness……  We would never understand grace if He could not bless those who are unworthy……
And so, God allows evil…. in order that through triumphing over evil…. God can display the fullness of His greatness and unfailing love….. and thus receive glory for all that He is…..  Now as we study Jesus crucifiction in Luke….. We discover that even the greatest evil in the history of the world….. was ordained by God……
Isaiah 53 says it was God the Father who was pleased to bruise Him……  Peter says on the day of Pentecost in Acts 2:23 when he preaches that great sermon that Jesus was crucified by your hands…… but it was also caused by the predetermined counsel and will of God…….
Acts 4 says the same thing, verses 27 and 28.
So the whole history of redemption is the story of God triumphing over trouble…. triumphing over sin and evil to achieve His purposes…..  Sin cannot stop His plans……
Sin and evil is not an obstruction to God……  It is part of the plan…… But the sinner is fully responsible and guilty for his own sin…..  God does all His work through triumphing over trouble…..
Last time we were in Luke 22---- We saw trouble from Judas, an enemy……. And we saw   Trouble from the Apostles…… His friends….. He just said again….. I am going to be betrayed to night by one of you….. They asked who would do such a thing…. For a minute or two….. Then They were once again fighting about power and place in the Kingdom……
That brings us to Luke 22…. V 31…. to the third source of trouble that night…..   Trouble through…. and triumph over the devil.... Let’s look at verse 31….
Luke 22:31- 38    NKJV
31 “Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift each of you like wheat. 32 But I have pleaded in prayer for you, Simon, that your faith should not fail. So when you have repented and turned to me again, strengthen your brothers.”
33 Peter said, “Lord, I am ready to go to prison with you, and even to die with you.”
34 But Jesus said, “Peter, let me tell you something. Before the rooster crows tomorrow morning, you will deny three times that you even know me.”
35 Then Jesus asked them, “When I sent you out to preach the Good News and you did not have money, a traveler’s bag, or an extra pair of sandals, did you need anything?” “No,” they replied.
36 “But now,” he said, “take your money and a traveler’s bag. And if you don’t have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one! 37 For the time has come for this prophecy about me to be fulfilled: ‘He was counted among the rebels.’ Yes, everything written about me by the prophets will come true.”
38 “Look, Lord,” they replied, “we have two swords among us.”“That’s enough,” he said.

Luke 22: 31- 38             Neues Leben
34 Doch Jesus entgegnete: »Petrus, lass mich dir etwas sagen.
Although it begins, “Simon, Simon,” the first player in the scene is actually Satan…...  “Simon, Simon, behold, Satan has demanded permission to sift you like wheat.”  Although He speaks to Simon, Satan has already showed up before…..  So we’ll consider him first…..
Satan has demanded permission to sift you like wheat…..  Ever sift wheat? what happened was you put the wheat in a large flat basket and     shake it and throw it in the air…. the wind blowing away the lighter chaff and leaving only the wheat…..  It’s a way to discern what is true and real…..   So that’s what Satan wants to do to us too…...  He wants to sift and shake you to find out if you’re real……
Jesus is saying… You’re all going to be shaken by Satan, you’re all going to be taken into a severe temptation and trial…..  You’re all going to encounter the adversary Satan, and you’re all going to fall away….  This is no surprise….  This is fulfillment of prophecy…… Matthew 26:31              NLT    Neues Leben
31 On the way, Jesus told them, “Tonight all of you will desert me. For the Scriptures say,‘God will strike the Shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’
This is no shock to Jesus, no shock to God….
Jesus went on to say in verse 32 of Matthew 26, “After I’ve been raised from the dead, I’ll go before you to Galilee.”  In other words, you’ll be recovered and we’ll meet in Galilee, you’ll be restored…..  This is not a fatal sifting.….
The devil knows that the disciples are weak….. They’ve been arguing about who´s the greatest…..
They’re full of pride and self-doubt….. Satan goes after them at the right time to shake up their lives….
Remember Revelation 12:10 says Satan accuses the brethren before God night and day…..
Satan often appears before the throne of God…..  Telling God that God looks foolish by being faithful to these sinners who belong to Him……  He tries to turn God against us….. But we have an advocate, Jesus Christ, who stands at the right hand of the Father interceding for us….. Remember God is by nature a Savior…..  But God allows the sifting and shaking to happen in our lives…… He has a plan even in our hard times…… God plans to do us good in the end…… When we get through our trials…… He will comfort us…. Turn to 2 Corinthians 1…..
2 Corinthians 1: 3, 4         NKJV     Schlachter 2000
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, 4 who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.

Then He will move our hearts to minister to and comfort others…… We are watchmen on the wall…… We had experienced great difficulties and doubts and disappointment in our lives so that we can have compassion on the people that the Lord puts in our lives…….That´s the big picture…. We suffer hard times… even tragedy…… we survive by hanging on to Jesus and His unfailing love……. He comforts us and then He says…… You go and proclaim the Good News….. You go and comfort others using this very same comfort that I have given you…… Not even Satan himself can do anything to us……. He can only be used by God to mold and shape us and prepare us to love and serve and comfort a lost and dying world….
Remember…. the devil is God’s devil…..  That Satan is God’s Satan…..   Nothing Satan does is a surprise to God……   He can only do that which God allows him to do….  Remember….. Satan had to ask permission from the Lord to go after the Apostles…... He has to ask permission from the Lord to go after us too….
Remember there are plenty of times when Satan   is allowed to come after believers for God’s own purposes…..  His purpose is here in verse 32….
this is one of the greatest statements in the scriptures….   Verse 32a….
Luke 22: 32a    NKJV  Schlachter 2000
32a“But I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail.”
And when Jesus prays, His prayers are  always answered……
Jesus  is our high priest….. interceding for us at the right hand of God…..  Satan wants  to destroy our saving faith…..  He wants disappointment and discouragement to wipe us out….. He wants us all to turn our back on our only Hope…….   Satan says, “Let me at them and I’ll destroy their trust in You….. I’ll destroy their faith in You.”
You know….  If it was left up to us, he would succeed…...  If we could lose our salvation…. We would lose it…..  If it were possible, it would happen……  If I had to save myself…. I couldn’t….. If I had to keep myself saved….. I couldn’t do it….. Thank God that our faith cannot fail…… not because of us…. but because of Jesus…… He is the one who secures our faith by His own intercession for us…..  And when Satan  lays an accusation against us, it does not stand…...  Romans 8 says….
Who can lay any charge to God’s elect?
It is the Lord Jesus Christ that once for all time made us righteous….  Christ has already paid in full the penalty for our sin, declared us just, granted us righteousness and therefore no condemnation can stand against us.  And in Romans 8…. Paul goes on to say, “Then what’s going to separate us from the love of Christ?”
And the answer is….. nothing……No accusation stands against us…..  Our great High Priest is for us and if God is for us, who can successfully be against us? Jesus often prayed for the disciples…. John recorded one of them in John 17…. A great place for your own personal quiet time with the Lord Jesus…..… How wonderful must it had been for them to hear Him pray that prayer……
So He says to Peter, “I have prayed for you,” Here  the word you is singular.......  “Simon, Simon, I have prayed for you… and for the others too…
As genuine believers…..we cannot fail ultimately…. Because Jesus  is our security…..  Remember the words of Jude…. v24,25
Jude 24, 25    NKJV
24 Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling, And to present you faultless Before the presence of His glory with exceeding joy,
25 To God our Savior, Who alone is wise, Be glory and majesty, Dominion and power, Both now and forever. Amen.

Jude 24,25      Schlachter 2000
Amen.
He will keep us from a final fatal fall….  It is His great Joy to

You say, “Well then…. why does God even allow it?”  Because, look at the end of verse 32,
Luke 22:32               NKJV   Schlachter 2000
32 But I have pleaded in prayer for you, Simon, that your faith should not fail. So when you have repented and turned to me again, strengthen your brothers.”
God allowed Satan to do his worst against Peter because out of it Peter would be able to strengthen others.
Jesus sees the victory in verse 32
You will fail but it is only temporary....
He did defect….  He did deny Christ…...  But his faith did not fail……  He was there at the tomb, remember?  At the resurrection?
He was there in the gathering of the Apostles when Jesus appeared after His resurrection……  And in John 21 he is restored to ministry…….  “Peter, do you love Me?  Peter, do you love Me?  Peter, do you love Me?  Feed My sheep.  Feed My lambs.  Feed My sheep.”  His failures  and recovery was another way that God could demonstrate the power of saving faith……..

It was like a preview of the High Priestly work of Christ who always intercedes for those who are His own…….  And that’s why our faith never fails……  If it fails, it isn’t the real thing….. Turn to 1 John 2:19…..
 1 John 2:19           NKJV   Schlachter 2000
19“They went out from us because they were not of us……  If they had been of us, they would have continued with us,”
Jesus says Peter……. You´re going to fail….. but you´re going to survive….. and after you get through this terrible hard time………. Feed my sheep….. strengthen the brethren…..
When  we read 1 Peter…. We can  see how many times Peter tries to strengthen others to be able to endure trials…….  That’s one of his constant themes…...  He became strong…..  He became an encourager to others…..He helped his brothers and sisters  to endure trials……..  Yes He saw that Peter would deny Him, Jesus Himself prophesied it…….  He also saw that Peter would become a source of strength to the early church……  Peter became the great preacher of the first eleven chapters of Acts…..  He was the great preacher on the day of Pentecost…. Trials and failure is turned into victory in Peter´s life…. Praise the Lord…..

Luke 22: 35- 38                 NLT
Luke 22: 35- 38                 Neues Leben

And now we come to the hostile world…. and the trouble that the hostile world is about to bring on Jesus´ followers starting on the very next day….. v 35…
Luke 22:35              NLT   Neues Leben
35 Then Jesus asked them, “When I sent you out to preach the Good News and you did not have money, a traveler’s bag, or an extra pair of sandals, did you need anything?” “No,” they replied.
Jesus is reminding them of how their previous ministry had been received….. They had been received very well during the three-year ministry of our Lord in Galilee and in Judea……
When they were with the Lord Jesus they were welcomed by massive crowds….. The people  were thrilled to be with Jesus as He taught and as He healed the sick and raised the dead.…...
They are expecting the kingdom now…. And the people are wonderful to them…… They have everything they need….. everywhere they go…… but starting tomorrow….. Everything´s going to change….
Jesus was going to be arrested….. And the shock of that arrest would send them scattering……  The deadly hatred against Jesus and all who belonged to Him begins……  first against Jesus as they kill Him…..  and then against them.......  soon most of them would die for the sake of the Gospel too….
Jesus had warned them about this….  Turn to Luke chapter 9….
Luke 9: 21- 23     NKJV
21 And He strictly warned and commanded them to tell this to no one, 22 saying, “The Son of Man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised the third day.”
23 Then He said to them all, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me.
 Luke 9: 21- 23     Schlachter 2000

Jesus had already given them plenty of indications that this was coming….. that there was going to be  deadly trouble in the future…..
But so far it hadn’t been their experience…… He said  you didn’t lack anything, did you?
That’s all over now….. look at  Verse 36…..
Luke 22: 36              NKJV Schlachter 2000
36 “But now,” he said, “take your money and a traveler’s bag. And if you don’t have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one!

The people have rejected Me….. And they will reject you because you belong to Me….
You’re going to have to take care of yourselves……….
Unbelievers are not going to support gospel preaching because unbelievers are the enemy of the gospel….. they are the enemies of the Lord Jesus and everyone who follows Him…..
Luke 22: 36b     NKJV  Schlachter 2000
36b “And if you don’t have a sword, let him who has no sword sell his outer robe and buy one.”
Wow….   this is a sword  for defense….. You’re going into a hostile world…. You’re going to have to provide your own support, your own supplies, and your own protection
If you don’t have a sword, then sell your outer robe and get a sword because you’re going into a hostile world….. This is not to say the gospel advances by the sword...... Christianity is not like Islam….. Jesus is using this phrase figuratively….. (ungang sprache)
We know that the Lord is not saying take a sword so that you can attack the enemies of the gospel and kill them….. a little later that night when they came to arrest Jesus…. the apostles, saw what was going to happen. They said, “Lord, shall we strike with the sword? And a certain one of them struck the slave of the high priest and cut off his right ear.” That was Peter…. Jesus answered and said, “Stop, no more of this.”
Matthew 26 tells us He also said, “If you live by the sword, you’ll die by the sword.”

Clearly this is just symbolic…. On no occasion in the book of Acts  did they ever retaliate or use a weapon of any kind…… They followed Jesus to death…. They laid down their lives for the sake of the Gospel……  Swords were used for things other than weapons….. They were used for cutting wood, to make a fire….. They were used for defending yourself against a wild animal….. It could be brandished in the event that you were attacked by a robber for self protection…..
Jesus had a lot more to say about this….
Turn to John 15…… Right here as we look at the record of Jesus life and ministry…..  These verses are Jesus words to them on the same night in the Upper Room….. Jesus is warning them of coming hatred and persecution…… we can insert John ch 15v18 all through the end of John 18…..  look at John 15…. V18…. Verse 18….
John 15:18-25         NKJV
18 “If the world hates you, you know that it hated Me before it hated you. 19 If you were of the world, the world would love its own. Yet because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. 20 Remember the word that I said to you, ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you. If they kept My word, they will keep yours also. 21 But all these things they will do to you for My name’s sake, because they do not know Him who sent Me. 22 If I had not come and spoken to them, they would have no sin, but now they have no excuse for their sin. 23 He who hates Me hates My Father also. 24 If I had not done among them the works which no one else did, they would have no sin; but now they have seen and also hated both Me and My Father. 25 But this happened that the word might be fulfilled which is written in their law, ‘They hated Me without a cause.’
John 15 : 18- 21   Schlachter 2000
24 Wenn ich nicht die Werke unter ihnen getan hätte, die kein anderer getan hat, so hätten sie keine Sünde; nun aber haben sie es gesehen und hassen doch sowohl mich als auch meinen Vater;
So later that night…. Jesus clarifies the symbolic language of a purse and a bag and a sword and He gets specific and says, “Look, what I’m saying in those analogies is…..  you’re going into a hostile world and they’re going to hate you because they hated Me……

Look down to verse 25….
They hated Me without a cause…..  You see….  The hatred that the world has toward the Lord Jesus and the gospel has nothing to do with Him or the gospel….  There is no cause for their hatred….  It is their natural wickedness…..
In verse 1 of John chapter 16…. Jesus continues….
John 16: 1      NKJV   Schlachter 2000
1 “These things I have spoken to you, that you should not be made to stumble.
I don’t want you to stumble when the persecution comes…..  Jesus goes on to say…..  “They will make you outcasts from the synagogue. An hour is coming for everyone who kills you to think that he is offering service to God. And these things they will do because they have not known the Father or Me, but these things I have spoken to you that when their hour comes, you may remember that I told you of them. And these things I did not say to you at the beginning because I was with you.”

I didn’t need to tell you this at the beginning…… because I was with you….. but now I´m going away and you will be hated….
In all of church history believers have been hated and even killed…..  More believers have been persected and killed for the Gospel in just the last 100 years….. than in the 1900 years before…. Big trouble!
Where´s the victory in this? verse 37…...

Luke 22: 37        NKJV   Schlachter 2000
37 For the time has come for this prophecy about me to be fulfilled: ‘He was counted among the rebels.’ Yes, everything written about me by the prophets will come true.”

Jesus said that everything written about me will be fulfilled…… Yes there was trouble…..trouble from Judas….. trouble from the fighting disciples……I´m the greatest….. no you´re not…. I am…. That very night in which Jesus was bretrayed…. Jesus said…… It´s OK I know the truth….. This is all part of the Father´s plan from before the foundation of the world……I will ……. there is trouble…. But I will redeem you…… as the scriptures say….. Here jesus quotes the 5th Gospel…. Isaiah 53 verse 12...Isaiah 53 verse 12. The suffering servant song of the Messiah….. Isaiah 52,53….
Jesus is saying that day to those apostles in the Upper Room…. “Look, I’m going to die, it’s a wicked and hateful world….. they hate Me and they’ll hate you…. They’ll kill Me and  they’ll kill you……. But do not be afraid….. I have overcome the world…. this is the way of victory…. Verse 38…
Luke 22: 38    NKJV   Schlachter 2000
38 “Look, Lord,” they replied, “we have two swords among us.”“That’s enough,” he said.

Why would He say it is enough? What do You mean it’s enough?

Well the answer is this, that’s all the sword you’re going to need, guys, because your future protection doesn’t depend really on you….. John records a lot of what Jesus said that night in his Gospel….. You will be  blessed to read these chapters in your own personal quiet times….. John 14,15,16,and 17…… I want to read them now….. but time fails…. Many of the Bible verses that we know and love and hide in our hearts come from this very night that Jesus was betrayed…… Jesus was preparing them and comforting them to get them ready for the very difficult times that would beign in a few hours now….. In those verses…. Jesus talks about their inheritance in Him….. Don´t be afraid….. I am going away… But I will prepare a place for you…. And I will return…I am the way and the truth and the Life…. I and the father are one…. You can pray and ask in my name and I  will hear you…. John 14: 26…. I will send another comforter….. The Holy Spirit….. When I am gone…. He will guide you in the truth…. He will abide with you forever…. He will teach you everything…. You will remember everything that I have said…… I give you an inheritance of my perfect peace…. John 14: 27….
These kind of promises go on and on…. John 16 v 13
Everything we need…. We have in Jesus…  Jesus has won the ultimate victory over sin and death…. It is finished…… We have nothing to fear.....
He was telling them about the future….. Things are going to get tough…… Trials and hard times are coming….. don´t be surprised….. take a bag and take a sword……. It’s coming…..  And when He was arrested, they were scattered……. Is that the end? No….
John 16:33                   NLT  Neues Leben
33 I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.”
Jesus says to His disciples…. we got big trouble tonight…… Things are going to go very sour……. Big trials and tribulations await….. You´re all going to run…… But take courage…… I give you my peace….
In John  chapter 17 Jesus prayed for them...... This is Jesus our great High priest…..interceding for His disciples….. They got thru those horrible hard times……. They went on in the Power of the Holy Spirit to proclaim the Good News to a lost and dying world….. Even though it cost them their lives…… And today Jesus intercedes for us……. He will not fail us….
What a night in that Upper Room…… Every trouble was followed by the promise of deliverance and victory…...

1 Corinthians 11: 23- 26             NKJV
23 For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you: that the Lord Jesus on the same night in which He was betrayed took bread; 24 and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “Take, eat; this is My body which is broken for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” 25 In the same manner He also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”
26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death till He comes.
1 Corinthians 11: 23- 26            Schlachter 2000
