Our Living Hope
Welcome….. It´s wonderful to see you all here this
morning….. As most of you know… We teach through the Bible verse by verse…. We
have been walking with Jesus through the Gospel of Luke…. What a privilege….
Last week we studied the Resurrection…..
It is still Sunday as we open the Word of God this
morning…… Luke 24…. Jesus is risen from the dead and has already appeared to a
few of the disciples……As we saw last week….
He appeared to Mary Magdalene first ….. But there is still great
confusion and uncertainty among those who have not yet seen the Risen Lord
Jesus…… The disciples did not really believe the women…..It was all too
impossible…. I´ll begin at verse 13….

Now behold, two of them were traveling that same day to a village called Emmaus,
which was seven miles from Jerusalem. 14 And they talked together of all these
things which had happened. 15 So it was, while they conversed and reasoned,
that Jesus Himself drew near and went with them. 16 But their eyes were
restrained, so that they did not know Him.
17
And He said to them, “What kind of conversation is this that you have with one
another as you walk and are sad?”
18
Then the one whose name was Cleopas answered and said to Him, “Are You the only
stranger in Jerusalem, and have You not known the things which happened there
in these days?”
19
And He said to them, “What things?”
So
they said to Him, “The things concerning Jesus of Nazareth, who was a Prophet
mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, 20 and how the chief
priests and our rulers delivered Him to be condemned to death, and crucified
Him.
21
But we were hoping that it was He who was going to redeem Israel. Indeed,
besides all this, today is the third day since these things happened. 22 Yes,
and certain women of our company, who arrived at the tomb early, astonished us.
23 When they did not find His body, they came saying that they had also seen a
vision of angels who said He was alive. 24 And certain of those who were with
us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said; but Him they did
not see.”

Then He said to them, “O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe in all that
the prophets have spoken! 26 Ought not the Christ to have suffered these things
and to enter into His glory?” 27 And beginning at Moses and all the Prophets,
He expounded to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself.

Then they drew near to the village where they were going, and He indicated that
He would have gone farther. 29 But they constrained Him, saying, “Abide with
us, for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent.” And He went in to stay
with them.
30
Now it came to pass, as He sat at the table with them, that He took bread,
blessed and broke it, and gave it to them. 31 Then their eyes were opened and
they knew Him; and He vanished from their sight.
32
And they said to one another, “Did not our heart burn within us while He talked
with us on the road, and while He opened the Scriptures to us?” 33 So they rose
up that very hour and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven and those who
were with them gathered together, 34 saying, “The Lord is risen indeed, and has
appeared to Simon!” 35 And they told about the things that had happened on the
road, and how He was known to them in the breaking of bread.

sich besprachen, da nahte sich Jesus selbst und ging mit ihnen.

sprach zu ihm: Bist du der einzige Fremdling in Jerusalem, der nicht erfahren
hat, was dort geschehen ist in diesen Tagen?
19 Und er sprach zu ihnen: Was? Sie sprachen zu ihm: Das
mit Jesus, dem Nazarener, der ein Prophet war, mächtig in Tat und Wort vor Gott
und dem ganzen Volk;
20 wie ihn unsere obersten Priester und führenden Männer
ausgeliefert haben, daß er zum Tode verurteilt und gekreuzigt wurde.
21 Wir aber hofften, er sei der, welcher Israel erlösen
sollte. Ja, bei alledem ist heute schon der dritte Tag, seit dies geschehen
ist!
22 Zudem haben uns auch einige Frauen aus unserer Mitte
in Verwirrung gebracht; sie waren am Morgen früh beim Grab,
23 fanden seinen Leib nicht, kamen und sagten, sie hätten
sogar eine Erscheinung von Engeln gesehen, welche sagten, er lebe.
24 Und etliche der Unsrigen gingen hin zum Grab und
fanden es so, wie es auch die Frauen gesagt hatten; ihn selbst aber haben sie
nicht gesehen.
25 Und er sprach zu ihnen: O ihr Unverständigen, wie ist
doch euer Herz träge, zu glauben an alles, was die Propheten geredet haben!
26 Mußte nicht der Christus dies erleiden und in seine
Herrlichkeit eingehen? 27 Und er begann bei Mose und bei allen Propheten und
legte ihnen in allen Schriften aus, was sich auf ihn bezieht.
28 Und sie näherten sich dem Dorf, wohin sie wanderten;
und er gab sich den Anschein, als wollte er weitergehen.
29 Und sie nötigten ihn und sprachen: Bleibe bei uns,
denn es will Abend werden, und der Tag hat sich geneigt! Und er ging hinein, um
bei ihnen zu bleiben.
30 Und es geschah, als er mit ihnen zu Tisch saß, nahm er
das Brot, sprach den Segen, brach es und gab es ihnen.
31 Da wurden ihnen die Augen geöffnet, und sie erkannten
ihn; und er verschwand vor ihnen.
32 Und sie sprachen zueinander: Brannte nicht unser Herz
in uns, als er mit uns redete auf dem Weg, und als er uns die Schriften
öffnete?
33 Und sie standen auf in derselben Stunde und kehrten
nach Jerusalem zurück und fanden die Elf und ihre Gefährten versammelt,
34 die sprachen: Der Herr ist wahrhaftig auferstanden,
und er ist dem Simon erschienen!
35 Und sie selbst erzählten, was auf dem Weg geschehen
war, und wie er von ihnen am Brotbrechen erkannt worden war.
Never have two people gone from such pits of despair to
heights of joy….. They went from
believing that all their hopes and all
their expectations….. were destroyed…. Even
their redemption and their salvation was
lost because Jesus had been crucified…... Everything that they had believed was
wiped out at the cross…… They were devastated….
Then as Jesus opened up the scriptures to them on the
way….. All their hopes and expectations
were again awakened as they began to better understand to Word of God….. It was
not all a bad dream…… It was necessary
for the Messiah to suffer…. God´s perfect plan….
Now as they recognize
Jesus in the breaking of the bread….. Their sadness and sorrow is transformed
by a living Savior into a living Hope…… Jesus is alive just as he said….. He is
Risen…… It´s all true after all….
Their redemption and salvation was accomplished….. It is truly vollbracht… because Jesus was alive…...
What Good News….
It would be hard for us to really understand their
disappointment at his death…… It would be equally hard for us to comprehend
their thrill…..
There are so many important lessons for us in this
story…..
The most important lesson is that Jesus rose from the dead….. Many theologians and many fans of Jesus
are unsure…..
As I said last week……. There is no Christianity without the cross and resurrection….
We need to remember that His death and resurrection had
been prophesied many times in great detail in the Old Testament…...
Knowing that Christ is alive is the first great lesson…….
The second great lesson is knowing that Scripture is alive…... Everything that
has been written…. Has been written for our benefit and blessing….
Those are the lessons that we want to learn as we look at
this tremendous text…..
This is Luke’s first account of the post-resurrection appearance of Jesus…….
Matthew, Mark and John have already followed the chronology of the resurrection……
They told us that Jesus appeared to Mary Magdalene,….. Then Jesus appeared to
the women on the road….
This appearance is not to the AAAA postles, that will
come later this same evening…… This is
an appearance of Jesus to two ordinary disciples….
Our Lord makes
this glorious appearance and teaches this incredible lesson on the truth of the
Old Testament regarding the Messiah to two ordinary disciples…. We don´t know
much about them…
It reminds me of what the Scripture says in 1
Cor 1: 26- 31…..
“Not many noble and not many mighty, the Lord
has chosen the lowly and the humble.”
The resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ is the most
important event that has ever happened in the history of the world….. His death
and His resurrection are the events that seal salvation…. If He doesn’t die…..
and rise from the dead…. there’s no
salvation for anyone…. the whole human race is damned to hell…...
Because the death and resurrection of the Lord Jesus
Christ are the most important events in God´s plan…. they
are predicted in the Scriptures….. Anybody who doesn’t study the Word of God
well….is needlessly ignorant….. It’s not hard to find….. The Suffering servant
passages alone are enough to bring someone to saving faith…. We´ll see that in
the Book of Acts when we meet the Ethiopian Eunuch…
That’s why Jesus says in verse 25, “O foolish men and
slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken……. Was it not
necessary for the Messiah, the Christ to suffer these things and to enter into
His glory?” Jesus say….. oh man……You should have known it……. There is no excuse
for those who possess the Scriptures…... It is not
the fault of the Scripture if we do not understand….. It is clear…... A failure
to search the Scriptures or already learned
traditions….. may obscure the truth….. But no matter what…. The reader who possesses the Scripture is
still responsible……. The sadness and the confusion of these two on the road to
Emmaus is because they didn’t understand the Scriptures…
It wasn’t that they didn’t believe the Scriptures….. They
did….. It was because they had only a limited
understanding of the Scriptures…... No doubt the rabbis and priests would have
emphasized only the triumph and the glory of Messiah…. Because it wasn’t just
these two disciples who had a limited theology of Messiah…. the whole nation
had a limited theology of Messiah….. They had only a partial understanding of the Scripture…
Their sadness, their disappointment and their confusion was because
that they didn’t understand all that the prophets have spoken…… They didn´t
understand the Big picture… The big picture includes not only the great King
Messiah who will rule and reigh forever and ever,…. The big picture also
includes the lessons from the temple sacrifices and the day of Atonement….. It
most certainly includes the Suffering servant passages of Isaiah 52 and 53……
Isaiah tells us more about the sufferings and punishment that Jesus took for us
than even the Gospels do….
That’s why the Apostle Paul when he met with Ephesian
elders in Acts 20 did not fail to give them the whole counsel of God….. They
knew and believed that the Messiah would come and He would establish the Kingdom
of God….. That’s the triumph and the glory……. That part they believed….. And
they were so excited about that that they were literally blinded to the suffering
and the death part….
And it wasn’t that Jesus didn’t tell them…... He told
them over and over again…. But it didn´t sink in…… They only saw the great king
Messiah…... Peter is a classic illustration of that…... Jesus said to the
disciples in Matthew 16 that He was going to die….. Peter said, “No, Lord,
that’s not going to happen……
There was just no place in their Messianic theology for a
dying Messiah….. It wasn’t that the Old Testament didn’t say it….. the Old
Testament said it in detail….. Some followed Jesus because they thought they
might get to sit on His right and left hand in the Kingdom. ….They wanted to
reign with Him…... That’s why they were so upset when He said, “I’m going to go to Jerusalem.”
And Thomas said….
“Well, let’s all go and die with You….. because they hate You there so much……
They´ll kill you…
So they had no room for the death of Christ in their
theology…… They really didn’t want to die with Him……
Well since the arrest and crucifixion…. The disciples were in hiding….. They forsook
Him and fled…… Only John stayed around at the cross….. They thought it was over…..
And they were scratching their heads about how they could have been so wrong…..
So here are two of them heading home…. convinced that all
their hopes are gone….. Verse 13…

Emmaus…. We don’t know anything about it. They were
talking about all the things that had taken place. Verse 15, Jesus just appeared
and walked along with them….
Their eyes were prevented from recognizing Him…. verse 16
says, and that was the way it was in every case after His resurrection….. They
don’t know who it is, He just walks along with them…… verse 17….

What are you talking about? “
”And they said still looking sad, they stopped in their
tracks, and one of the men, Cleopas, answered…. and said to Him, ‘Are You the
only one visiting Jerusalem and unaware of the things that have happened here
in these days?’” This is to say that what was on everybody’s lips in
Jerusalem….. the massive crowds that were there for Passover….. was Jesus…...
Then the crucifixion….. the whole story was on everybody’s lips and
Cleopas says….. Can you be the only one who doesn´t know?
Then verse 22….. The women were at the tomb early in the
morning and didn’t find His body….. They came saying that they had also seen a
vision of angels who said He was alive….. They didn’t believe that for a
minute…. none of the apostles believed that….. But it was a puzzle…
The grave was empty….. The women said that….. They
believed that….. But Jesus alive….risen from the dead?
The whole thing is too bizarre…... If He is alive and if
He’s been alive since morning…… where is He?
They had not heard the testimony that the women gave that
they had in fact seen Him…. including Mary Magdalene….. All they got was the
part we didn’t see the body in the grave……
So they’re totally confused….. And the great teacher, as
all good teachers do, uses questions to elicit their confusion…… so that He can bring the answers…... Jesus
will help them to understand….
That leads us, secondly, to the source of understanding…..
The need for understanding was generated by ignorance of the Scripture…… The
source of understanding was generated by the Scripture itself…… They had no
understanding because they didn’t know the Scripture…... Verses 25 to 27 are
just magnificent, magnificent verses….

the prophets have spoken!

First
comes the rebuke in verse 25, “O foolish
men and slow of heart, to believe in all that the prophets have spoken.” Secondly
comes the statement of fact, “It is
necessary for the Christ, the Messiah to suffer these things and to enter into
His glory.”
And then comes the proof….. beginning with Moses and with
all the prophets He explained to them the things concerning Himself in all the
Scriptures…..
Their confusion is because they only understand part of
the Old Testament….. They only understand part of the prophecies regarding
Messiah….. They have a limited view of Messiah…..
They were right to expect Christ to reign and rule….. But
that was only part of it…... Was it not necessary, adai(??) in the Greek,
divine necessity for the Messiah to suffer these things and to enter in to His
glory? Suffering and glory…..You missed
the first half…..
Notice please…. He
doesn’t blame the Scripture…… He doesn’t say, “Well, the Old Testament is a really
hard book….. Jesus Does not blame the Old Testament….. Jesus doesn’t say, “I
feel your pain, I feel your pain, it’s so hard to understand the Old
Testament.”
Remember He’s
speaking to first-century people it´s a thousand years after David who wrote
the Psalms…
They are 1500
years removed from Moses who wrote the Pentateuch…. They’re almost two thousand
years from Abraham…... The fault is not with the Scripture….. . Jesus says
things like this, “Have you not read?
You’re wrong because you know neither
the Scriptures nor the power of God.”
He says, “Search
the Scriptures for they are they which speak of Me.” The Old Testament is
clear….. the Old Testament is revelation….. Look at verse 26…

Ought not the Christ to have suffered these things and to enter into His

Jesus says…. Come on now…..Wasn’t it necessary? The
assumption here is they would remember that there are some
things in the Old Testament that speak of the Messiah suffering….. And
then Jesus decides to make it clear to them, verse 27….

And beginning at Moses and all the Prophets, He expounded to them in all the

I love this, so beautiful, so simple, the verb “expound” means to open up….. Jesus
lays a foundation under them…. Giving them
a true biblical understanding of
the Messiah’s suffering sacrifice…….
What a wonderful opportunity…… Wish we were there….
Remember
Jesus is the theme of Scripture……. He’s the theme of the Old Testament…...
All 39 books talk about Him.... starting with Moses, Genesis, He sweeps through
as they walk along the road, the whole Old Testament, 39 books, and speaks
about Himself…….
What He wants to communicate to them is before the glory comes the suffering…...
Was it not necessary for Christ to suffer? Did you...is there some question
about whether sin necessitates death? Is there some question about that in your
minds? Was there not enough in the Old Testament on blood atonement to make
that clear?
Starting with Genesis where God Himself slays an animal
to make coverings for Adam and Eve….. You have a picture of the death of an
innocent to cover the sin of a guilty sinner….. What
about all the Levitical offerings?
Leviticus 17:11 spelled it out…... Life of the flesh is
in the blood….. I have given it to you on the altar to make atonement for your
souls, for it is the blood that makes atonement….. They knew that sin caused
death….. and that God would accept the death of a substitute…... But they also
knew that no animal ever offered satisfied God completely….. because they had
to offer another animal and another and
another…. . And what about the Day of Atonement? What about the Passover?
Everyone knew that there was never a final substitute…..
But they had to be pictures of that final substitute that would come…..
But there had never been a final substitute….. never been
a sufficient sacrifice…..
According to Alfred Edersheim…. There are 465 passages
about the Messiah in the OT….. Beginning with Genesis1….v2….. The rabbis said
that the Spirit of Messiah was there moving over the face of the waters…
He might have started in Genesis 3:15….. He might have
told them, “Do you not know that the Messiah is the wounded seed of the woman who crushes the
serpent’s head?” That´s exactly what the ancient Rabbi´s taught…..
Maybe
Jesus went to Psalm 40 verse 7…

The writer of
Hebrews says this text applies only to the Messiah……
Perhaps He went to Zechariah 12:10…. and reminded them
that Zechariah had said, “One day Israel would look on Him whom they had
pierced…..”
Jesus would have gone to Isaiah for sure… The suffering
Servant passages are wonderful and clear….
Perhaps Jesus would have begun in verse 13 of chapter 52.
“Behold My servant,” “My servant” is a technical identification of the Messiah
throughout this section of Isaiah….. This is a picture of Messiah…… It’s unmistakable…...
The Messiah will come and be the final
sacrifice….. “The Lord will cause the iniquity of all of us to fall on Him....”
The end of the chapter, “He will bear the sin of many, intercede
for the transgressors….. It was clear that the Messiah was going to die as the
final sacrifice…. The final…. Once for all sacrifice….
Philip, one of the deacons in the early church, became an
evangelist and he was called by God to go south to a road, Acts 8:26… he went there……. Ran into an Ethiopian eunuch…
He was a court official of Candace, Queen of the Ethiopians….. He had come to
Jerusalem to worship…..
He was sitting in his chariot, reading Isaiah….. The
passage of Scripture which he was reading was the suffering servant passage in
Isaiah… 52…53..
“And the eunuch answered Philip and said, ‘Please tell
me, of whom does the prophet say this, of Himself, or someone else?’
And Philip opened his mouth and beginning from this Scripture, he preached Jesus to him.”
Jesus
started with Moses on the road to Emmaus….. Philip started with Isaiah…... He
believed the Good News as Phillip taught him the scriptures…… And He was
immediately baptized….. As we rejoin the
disciples on the road… We see that their hearts were on fire as Jesus explained
the scriptures to them…… Scripture was true…... Jesus was the Messiah….. It was
God´s plan and He is alive…..
Now
that brings us to the final point. We started with a need for understanding and
then we find the source of understanding........ The Word of God…..
Now we come to the response to understanding…. A proper
understanding of Scripture produces joy…..
Now this is really important….. Remember…. They
still don’t know this is Jesus…… And what is firing their hearts is not Jesus
yet….. What fires their hearts is the truth of the Scriptures….. It’s the truth,
not the person….. Anyone who explains accurately the Scriptures….. can expect
to see a response…. Understanding the truth fulfills the true believer’s
deepest longings… When you understand the Word of God, it all makes sense…..
To understand the Scripture is to begin know God and His
character….. It is wonderful to know that God’s plan is unfolding perfectly…..
When we understand….. We know God is
sovereign and His purpose is being accomplished…….
This is so
exciting…… It was the teaching and explaining of the Word of God that helped
them…… Their sadness and hopelessness was transformed into joy……. It began as
they understood the Word….. Remember they still don´t know they are with
Jesus….
They’re on fire on the inside….. He
seems to be going to continue on the way…. But they don´t want to stop the
Bible study… They beg Him to stay with
them…. Stay….. And He went in to stay with them…..
And then…. V30…

This is a passive verb….. This is something that happens to them…..
Their eyes were opened in the same way that their eyes
were prevented in verse 16.... No one who saw Jesus after the resurrection recognized Him unless God opened their eyes…..
Did they recognize His prayer?
Did they see some fresh wounds in His hands or His
wrists? I think they probably did…… And they knew He was alive……
In an instant…… they go from the depths of despair to the heights of great joy….. Suddenly they know It´s Jesus! And He vanished
out of their sight….
They had hoped He would be their Messiah and Redeemer and
turns out He was…. All the Scripture now made sense…… verse 32…

And they said to one another, “Did not our heart burn within us while He talked
with us on the road, and while He opened the Scriptures to us?”
32 Und sie sprachen zueinander: Brannte nicht unser Herz in
uns, als er mit uns redete auf dem Weg, und als er uns die Schriften öffnete?
Or… While He was explaining the Scriptures to us?”
What lit their hearts on fire was an understanding of
Scripture….. The best thing that could ever be done for anybody is to explain
to them the Scriptures…. It´s Good news
that we cannot keep secret… v 33

So they rose up that very hour and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven
and those who were with them gathered together, 34 saying, “The Lord is risen
indeed, and has appeared to Simon!” 35 And they told about the things that had
happened on the road, and how He was known to them in the breaking of bread.

war, und wie er von ihnen am Brotbrechen erkannt worden war.
They went back to tell them everything they knew…..
Conclusion
Jesus
is alive….. and the Scriptures are alive….. The Word of God is
what the Holy Spirit uses to cause conviction of sin…… Repentance follows from
believing the truth about ourselves….. We learn this truth from the Word…. We
are guilty and lost in our sin…… We need a Savoir…. The scriptures tell us
clearly that Jesus is our only hope……..
Jesus is a Living Hope…… We can hold on to Him even when our world is
falling apart…. One minute these two ordinary disciples were sad and lost in
despair…… Then as the scriptures are
explained to them…. They were reminded of God´s plan and promises….. They were
comforted to know that everything was unfolding exactly as God the Father
wished….. For their good and salvation….. And of Course for God´s eternal
glory….
Their
hearts were warmed and set on fire…… They turned back to
Jerusalem because they wanted to tell the others what they had learned....
When
your heart's on fire because you understand the Scripture…. you have an
internal joy because you know it’s the truth and your salvation is secure…..
and you can’t keep it secret….. so you run to spread Good news….
Burning hearts on fire because we have searched the
scriptures…… repented of our sins and believed the Good news…. And we can enjoy
the exhilarating joy that comes from understanding the Word…… Knowing the truth
motivates us to proclaim it…… And that’s what these two experienced…... They were
so excited…… They went back to Jerusalem immediately… Peter was there….He
understood the extreme importance of the Resurrection…. listen to what he wrote
to encourage us this morning…. 1 Peter 1v3…

Feuer geprüft und geläutert wird - und euer Glaube ist Gott sehr viel kostbarer
als bloßes Gold. Wenn euer Glaube also stark bleibt, nachdem er durch große
Schwierigkeiten geprüft wurde, wird er euch viel Lob und Herrlichkeit und Ehre
einbringen an dem Tag, an dem Jesus Christus der ganzen Welt offenbart werden wird.
8 Ihn liebt ihr, obwohl ihr ihn nie gesehen habt. Obwohl
ihr ihn nicht seht, glaubt ihr an ihn; und schon jetzt seid ihr erfüllt von
herrlicher, unaussprechlicher Freude.
9 Das Ziel eures Glaubens wird die Rettung eurer Seelen
sein.
